Farley Havelock

Brief Overview

Farley starts off as a white human man but, after being kidnapped by a mysterious cult, is forcibly turned into a vampire. He marries Moira O'Farrell after fleeing with her to Berlin, Germany in the 1920s, and has three children with her: Jasper, Matthias, and Sylvia. In addition to his relationship with Moira, Farley is in a polyamorous relationship with his childhood best friend, Josef Vlasák, and (platonically) Josef's wife, Penny Whitaker.

Early Life & Military Service

Farley was born in Manhattan, NYC, in 1899 to German-born Elsa Auerbach Havelock and Fabian Havelock, a German-American man. His younger brother was Theodore Havelock, a sensitive and artistic soul who was brutalized relentlessly by their father throughout their shared childhood.

Fabian's family owned the Hound Pits Pub in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Farley was recruited into working at the pub from a young age, initially as a dishwasher and, later, serving drinks. Fabian took his eldest son to informal boxing and wrestling clubs in the city during his adolescence, where Farley learned to brawl alongside gangsters and various shady types. Fabian was killed in a shooting at the family pub during Farley's teenage years.

Farley's closest childhood friend was Josef Vlasák, a Jewish resident of the Lower East Side born to Czech and Mongolian immigrants. The two boys got into a great deal of trouble together and were nigh-inseparable. In 1916, Joe and Farley ran away to Canada to enlist and fight in the Great War with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They were stationed on the Western Front together within the 22nd (French Canadian) Infantry Battalion, and got a taste of cosmic horror before they returned to the United States.

Theodore Havelock died of the 1918 influenza outbreak; Farley missed his funeral by a scant few weeks. In the aftermath, Elsa was driven to madness by grief, and Farley struggled to care for her.

Meeting Moira & Travels

Moira traveled to New York City in the autumn of 1918 with her older sister, Sian. She met Farley by responding to a help wanted advert that he placed in a local newspaper as Farley and Josef struggled to get the pub back on its feet. Moira provided much-needed help and manpower to their team, and the pub continued running as normal until Prohibition was put into effect in 1920, whereupon the Hound Pits Pub became a speakeasy. Moira departed NYC to work as a bootlegger and supply the pub with liquor, while Farley remained as the bartender. Although interracial marriage was not prohibited in the state of New York at this time, Elsa opposed her son's relationship with Moira and they did not marry on paper until they left the United States.

In 1922, Farley received a tip-off that a police raid was imminent and that he and Moira were in danger. They were forced to abandon the Hound Pits Pub (as well as all of their non-portable assets) and fled to Canada together, whereupon they crossed the Atlantic and came to Berlin to meet up with Josef, who had already established himself in the city as a black market smuggler specializing in archaeological artifacts.

Appearance

Farley is six feet and seven inches (201 centimeters) tall, and very muscular. He is white, and has light brown hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo of a kingfisher on his right bicep.

Special Inventory

Farley keeps his dog tags from his service with the CEF after he returns home in 1918. After he learns about the existence of magic, he asks Moira to summon his little brother's spirit so he can say goodbye to Teddy. However, the summoning goes terribly wrong, trapping the lost, confused spirit of a child in Farley's dog tags. Farley wears them always, suffering the maddened whispers of his dead baby brother in an effort to protect him until his spirit can be put to rest.
